may be the absolute number one million dollar question when making the switch! Since buying organic is often times much more expensive than regular produce, so the answer to the question: how do I know what organic foods to use can be complicated. How do you decide which ones you should spend the extra money on, and which ones are okay to purchase from the regular produce section? And also, why is it so important anyway?Well, let’s start here……. The produce ranking, developed by analysts at Environmental Working Group (EWG), is based on the the results of nearly 60,700 sample tests for pesticide residues on produce collected by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2000 and 2010. If you haven’t heard about the EWG, I highly recommend that you check out their site. They have tons of information on chemical use in products, legislative news and a searchable database of products that are safe. Okay, so let’s get back to organic fruits and veggies. I’m sure that you while you probably recognize that organic is always the best to use, another consideration should be how far your produce had to travel to get to your plate. Food that travels a shorter distance is always fresher, was more vine-ripened and buying local produce is a great way to start, since most local farmers are much better land stewards than huge commercial farms, so the produce will have more nutrients and fewer chemicals. Some other considerations regarding your produce would be to eat more seasonally, but we’ll save that for another post, so stay tuned….. So, the answer to the question, how do I know what organic foods to use? Below is a graphic of what foods you should consider buying organically. The list is in two parts, the top 12 you should definitely buy organic (known as the “dirty dozen”), and the top 15, (known as “the clean 15”) that are much better in terms of pesticide residue and you will be okay to purchase from the regular produce section.
