DIY - Natural Cough Syrup
Tis the season to get sick! When that unwanted cold pops up, having a natural cure for that cough is just what you need!
Let’s face it, most commercially available cough syrups are loaded with sugar and alcohol and, well, a whole plethora of really yukky ingredients.
I’m sure that you’ve probably heard about using honey and lemon in a cup of tea to help with cold symptoms. That’s been the advice given by my mom and my grandmother before her, and probably yours too!
Turns out there’s real science behind the use of lemon and honey to combat the symptoms (and promote healing) of coughs, colds and flu.
Honey, especially local and raw honey, has amazing antibacterial and antioxidant benefits. Meaning, it actually boosts your immune system! In other words, it helps you get better!
Lemon, is a natural cleaning agent, loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants. So here again, it helps you get better!
So let’s get to the meat and potatoes of a DIY-Natural Cough Syrup shall we? The best news, is that you probably already have all the ingredients needed for this powerful and healing cough suppressant right in your pantry already! YAY!!! Which means that it will be less expensive and more effective!!! LOVE THAT!!!
Natural Cough Syrup
- 1 TBSP raw honey
- 1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- dash cayenne pepper
But, let’s take it a step further shall we? You know me, always on the unconventional hunt! Why is winter the time when we usually get sick to begin with?
The answers to that question can be varied, but here’s my educated opinion.
First of all, lack of fresh air. It’s cold outside, our windows are all shut and the heat is on. Making our homes somewhat of an oven. It’s pretty much common knowledge that our homes can be some of the most toxic environments (even if you’re a monster cleaner). Our homes are filled with toxic fumes from paint, textile additives, carpeting, cleaning products, and the list goes on. In fact, one of the biggest culprits that is causing the rampant increase in antibiotic resistant strains of viruses and bacteria that we are experiencing today is the overuse/consumption of antibiotics, from the food that we eat, the use of hand sanitizers, and other antibacterial cleaning products.
So, how do we clean our homes and freshen the air to promote health? That’s another great question and the answer to which has become one of my favorite subjects lately.
In my opinion, the answer to that is essential oils. For the last few months, I have begun diffusing essential oils in my home and I am thrilled with the results. The air is cleaned, fresh and I can tell a big difference in the way that I feel (including my mood) when I use my diffuser instead of that old standby can of air freshener.
You do however need to be particular about the type of oils that you use. I would always recommend ones that are certified pure therapeutic grade. You want ones that are 100% essential oil and minimally processed so that they have maintained their peak effectiveness.
To that end, here’s a great natural cough syrup utilizing the amazing properties of essential oils.
So, what about the air in your home? As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been so totally enjoying diffusing oils and I have a great recipe that will clean the air, help to relieve congestion, lift your mood and well, help you get better (or not get sick in the first place).
Here are two great diffuser recipes to try!
